Souvenirs of the Paris Dogs Cemetery 3

Here is the third vintage postcard from my collection. An impressive headstone by anyone's standard. This faithful companion lived from 1896 to 1908. Sadly, I cannot work out the dog's name which must be in French, but such is the script used, I cannot work out which way up the letters are! Any assistance in identifying the name would be much appreciated.

  1. I am guessing that the letters go up, which I think would make the dog's name "Diane." Anyone else care to venture a guess?

  2. Margaret, I think you are right, I too read "Diane" here; and the inscription is absolutely fabulous; it translates as :

This monument perpetuates the memory of our faithful companions who are sleeping in our heart the same way they slept in our bed, where they hogged all the space !

(I use the word "hogged" where it says "took", but I definitely read this as a warm memory of an animal who took up a big part of the bed and made no bones about it !) Lovely !!! Good find Laurie...

  3. Margaret and Owen, Thanks very much for making things clearer. I am looking forward to seeing Owen's tree shot this weekend. I just cannot believe how many posts he has done this year. Remarkable!

  4. Love your blog! On a trip thru France & Germany I was lucky enough to stumble upon a couple of cemetarys. They were immaculate and so well landscaped and cozy (crazy word for a cemetary) but true.

  7. Hi Linda, I got them mostly from bric-a-brac fails and mail order approvals. Do you get many vintage postcards for sale your way? Some of the earlier photographs I posted - children with toys etc. came from an ephemera shop in the next town for only the equivalent of a few cents each. Sadly, it closed a few months back.
