Palermo Catacombs - Another Look
Another search of my collection of vintage postcards and photographs unearthed several more views of the catacombs at Palermo that provoked such strong interest when I first featured it on this blog on the post entitled States of Preservation in Sicily. Here are five more views of the preserved remains on display in the catacombs. Remember to click on the image for an enlarged close up view to enable a more detailed look at the figures.

I was driving in the Wisconsin country side this weekend and was fascinated by the scattering of small and lonely cemetaries. One was completely land locked, surrounded by a farmer's fields. They usually only had enough gravestones to be from one family. And long forgotten now.
ReplyDeleteSharon,
ReplyDeleteThank you. Your journey certainly sounds interesting. When you say they normally contained enough gravestones to be from one family, were any of the inscriptions still readable? What period were they from? I wish I had seen them, too!

S0 - whats with the small boxes under the bodies? Are they animals? or is it human remains still? they kind of look like rabbit hutches.
ReplyDeleteSimply fascinating! Thanks for these posts.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna!
ReplyDeleteThe small boxes contain babies and infants. I agree with you, they do look like hutches.
I love the series of posts you've done on cemeteries. This one is wonderfully creepy! I've never been anywhere where you could actually see anything like these. Very interesting! ~Lori
