Early Green Burial or Maybe Not?

While not the clearest of photographs, probably around 1900, I cannot help noticing that this coffin is covered in foliage, front, top and rear. I feel sorry for the poor chap in front who looks to be suffering quite some discomfort through the heavy load. Perhaps the foliage draped on the coffin is a rural custom of some sort? If anyone has seen anything similar, I'd love to hear from them.

  1. How very odd...I would never have noticed. It is a lovely idea for decoration--life over death. Thank you so much for sharing this, and for your sharp eye in noticing so much about this postcard!

You're right, that guy is having a tough time with the load. (grin)

  2. Hey Laurie, your attention to detail is indeed awesome. I'm so happy that the phtographer blurred the delicate areas on the jack dog...

Just saw a couple of interesting cemetery photos here :

And also, just got a nice Jack Roger photo myself today at a flea market... will be posting it very shortly... keep an eye out.
