Unhappy Lions. I wonder Why?

Of the many lions overlooking the wonderful Peto Gardens at Iford Manor, this trio are certainly the most unhappy looking. I am not sure why, but just looking at them depresses me . . . Perhaps being stared at all day long has caused them to lose their Pride?

  1. Those are the saddest lions I've ever seen. I wonder what tragedy befell them. Great photos!! :) Silke

  2. Wow, that is really the first time I've seen sad lions in sculpture! There are a few houses in my area with the proud statuesque lions guarding the driveways.

  3. Ils sont bien malheureux tes lions ! ! ! Tu leur donnes à manger au moins ? Mais ce genre de "masque" est propre au propriétaire des lieux !... See you !...8:))

  4. What a glum trio! I agree with you. Jeff here is wondering if you'r feeding them or maybe they're just ressembling the owner. To me, they're expressing grief, and there may be some story to the family here.

  5. Maybe something befell them like what the White Witch did to animals in Narnia... they got turned to stone, and aren't happy ?

Most stone lions here in France seem very regal and ferocious looking, not depressed like these...

  6. What a mystery. I definately think they are sad to not be the king of the jungle anymore.

  7. They look the same as the Lion in The Wizard of Oz film... I'm sure they must have modelled the character on them!.. I'm sure they represent some metaphorical deepness, the troubles of britain?, the sadness of pride? the wastefulness of bravery?.... hhmmmmmm.
