Babes in the Wood?

Another image from Iford Manor and the Peto Garden. This is on the wall of the magical Cloisters where Opera is staged. I am not sure of the story behind this, presumably, classical panel, but one thing is sure - the cherubs [if that is what they are?] look really spooky!. What, I wonder, is their intent and just what are they doing to that tree. Remember to click on the image for a closer view - look closely at their eyes, but not for too long . . .

  1. They are really spooky! But I love it :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm enjoying yours, too. Excited to see how the graveyard one comes together.

    Have a good weekend!

  2. They're like little aliens or something, perhaps they're related somehow to my archetypal angels, which everybody but children think are scary.

  3. Definitely SPOOKY... and it looks like their private parts have been lopped off ? Maybe that's why they are looking so positively evil minded, they are thinking ... revenge !?!

  4. I noticed about their privates too..?

Maybe it was the artists first piece to do on his own and didn't get the eyes right.

Was this on "just" a wall, or side of a building?

  5. Oh, how beautiful--but scary somehow.
