I'm in the U.S. (North Carolina). I often see stones covered in lichen or other growth (although not as bad the 'furry' one you posted!) The stones can be cleaned safely if it is done properly. Out of all the repair work I do, cleaning a stone that's in really poor shape is the most fun...
